Surgical Procedures for Weight Loss

Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass

Sebastian River Medical Center performs the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass procedure. According to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and the National Institutes of Health, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is the current gold standard procedure for weight loss surgery. It is one of the most frequently performed weight loss procedures in the United States.

Laparoscopic Gastric Sleeve™

Patients who don’t want to have a long-term implanted medical device now have another option with the laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy or Laparoscopic Sleeve surgery. Through five small incisions, each between one and two inches long, the surgeon removes approximately 80-90 percent of the stomach. This new stomach has a total capacity of just 70 to 100 ccs, which means patients feel full or satisfied after eating only two to three ounces of food.

Biliopancreatic Diversion With Duodenal Switch (BPD/DS)

The biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD/DS) is a combined surgery that makes your stomach smaller and bypasses part of your small intestine for the best-reported, long-term percentage of weight loss. All insurance companies require a BMI of equal to or greater than 35 with co-morbid conditions, or a BMI equal to or greater than 40.

Single Anastomosis Duodenal Ileostomy (SADI) Duodenal Switch or Loop DS

The traditional duodenal switch with biliopancreatic diversion (DS/BPD) was first introduced in 1986. It is a complex bariatric surgery that has not been widely implemented despite its excellent results and long term weight reduction success.  Due to this a simple version of the duodenal switch was introduced over 5 years ago, the loop DS or the SADI.

Conversion Surgery

If your laparoscopic adjustable gastric band needs to be removed for whatever reason, then weight regain is highly likely. The laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, after lap band removal, is a very good surgical option for many band patients who experienced problems with a gastric band or who did not reach their weight loss goals.
